Sunday night I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and I could not believe how sore my quads were! I wasn’t sore after my 20 mile training run, so the fact that it was so painful took me by surprise. I took a sick day on Monday and spent 90% of the day on the couch. Thankfully Neil was working from home and was able to take care of me (and the dog).
The hardest things to do have been going up and down stairs and sitting down and getting out of chairs. Also sitting down/getting up from the toilet. I’m very happy to be using the handicap toilet at work because it has handrails and makes it 100x easier to sit down.
The legs are feeling a little bit better today, but my left foot is not. I decided I needed to make a massage appointment stat. I was lucky enough to find a place two blocks from my work that had an opening this afternoon.
The massage was AMAZING. She spent a lot of time on my legs, but stayed away from my foot because it is too soon to tell what kind of injury it is. Interestingly, my left leg (which is where my stress fracture was and where my bad foot is) was a lot tighter than my right. My quads feel a lot better – essentially like I foam rolled every inch of them.
In terms of exercise, I’m following the guidelines from Hal Higdon’s zero week. If my foot stops hurting by Thursday, I will go on a short and easy run. But otherwise I’m ready to bring back the cross-training. I really really miss my bike. I can’t wait to take it to Rock Creek Park this weekend like the good old days.
I also have some future exercise plans and goals, which I will share this week. Also, my first giveaway will be tomorrow evening if I can get my wobbly legs to the store.
Here are some of the official pictures from the race. Any votes on which one I should buy?![]()

I love the picture of you running across the finish line
I hope your legs feel better soon!
The same thing happened to me after my half marathon last weekend. I wasn’t sore at all from 10.5 miles (my longest training run) but my legs were hurting pretty bad after 13. Weird! I hope the massage helped and that your foot feels better. I think you should get the finish line picture.
I love all of your pictures and think you should get whichever ones inspire you and remind you of your accomplishment!
I had very similar post-marathon recovery. I wasn’t sore after my 20 miler, so I was completely unprepared for the pain of the marathon. It really gives the body a beating! A day on the couch and a massage are essential to recovery. I hope your foot is feeling better soon.
I love your pics! The one at the finish line is great!
Wow, those are some great race pictures! How’d you do that?
Woah your race pictures turned out AWESOME!!! I would buy the one of you crossing the finish line with your arms up plus the first and last ones!!
I love the one of you crossing the finish line!
It’s so funny that I miss my bike too. I’m so interested to hear if you have plans for more tris or marathons
Happy healing! I hope your foot feels better soon.
I love the finish line picture! Great idea getting a massage and I think it’s great you are taking your time healing and resting. Feel better!
I can totally relate to the soreness — I never knew using a toilet could be so painful!
haha
I love all these pictures, especially the one of you crossing the finish! I definitely think you should buy that as a reminder of your huge accomplishment.
I only ever ordered pictures from my first tri and my first marathon. With both of those, though, I had an obvious choice of which I liked best. In this case, you have a lot of good options. I’d probably consider the CD or download!
I love that you’re smiling in the second shot. I have a good one from that photographer, too. And I really love the finish line!
Your pictures game out so wellll!!! I’m torn between the one of you crossing the finish line with your arms in the air (such an awesome shot) or the one of you in front of Iwo Jima….both are so great.
And I can’t wait to hear what is next!
I love the picture with your hands up! It’s awesome!
