During last year’s triathlon training, I did a lot of two-a-day workouts meaning I ran before work and swam after work. Or bike commuted and lifted in the same day. If you are employed full-time, sometimes it is really the only way to fit everything in AND get enough sleep every night.
Today I actually had an unusual workout schedule because I had 3 workouts. Don’t worry, none of them were crazy strenuous.
First up, a swim date with my friend Nyema. We were g-chatting and she said she wanted to come swimming with me, which I gladly accepted. I picked her up at around 6 am and we drove to Wilson High School.
She mentioned she hadn’t swam in a long time, so I was completely surprised when it turned out she was an amazing swimmer. True, she had not swam in a while but she was on the swim team AND was a lifeguard AND an instructor! Not only was the swim workout more enjoyable than usual because I had a friend, but she also gave me tips to help me swim better. I was lifting my head too far out of the water when I was taking breaths, so she showed me how to do this more efficiently. I still have a lot to work on, but it is great having someone to teach me.
Second, a lunch bike ride home and back to walk Leela. I used the bike share, which makes me miss my bike because it is so much lighter, but I realize I’m lucky to have this as an option. Leela’s ankle is slowly but surely healing up. Only 2 more weeks until she can start taking longer walks!
She refused to look at the camera for any pictures. I bet she found my blog and is embarrassed I have a whole page dedicated to her.
Third, the Crystal City 5k. When I signed up for this race, I knew I probably wasn’t going to race it. And by the time this afternoon rolled around, I didn’t even want to go. My main motivation was that I had already paid and that I had posted it on the blog. In the end I’m glad I did it. I think going to races is a great way to get a jolt of energy from being surrounded by the running community.
Being around all those runners inspires me to keep going and keep working to become a better runner. Plus I got to hang out with Katie & Liz before the race.
When I started the race, it was super crowded. After a few minutes of weaving, I looked down at my Garmin and saw it was still in bike mode and I couldn’t see my average pace. That definitely frustrated me. By mile 2, my legs were starting to feel really tired from all of the day’s workouts plus yesterday’s boot camp. I finished the race in 24:35:
Now I’m off to pick my cousin off from the airport! Have a great weekend!

I think you did great in the 5K! Good job! I know what you mean about the positivity surrounding the racing community. Some of my friends think I’m insane for running and I am constantly asked why I would want to do something like that. It’s nice to be around people who get it!
Also, Murphy won’t look at the camera either. I usually have to hold a piece of food behind it to get a good picture.
I never thought to do use food to make her look…good idea (and stupid of me for not thinking of that)
You must have been at Wilson at exactly the same time as me. It was pretty crowded for a Friday morning.
I was actually looking out for you since I know you go so often – what days do you go?
In the mornings, I’m usually there M-R-F. I wear a super-bright green and pink suit these days. Plans to go there this week?
It is absolutely fabulous that you managed to squeeze in 3 totally different workouts in one measly day! Great job on pushing through and running the 5K – eventhough you weren’t really feeling it!
So I was thinking about it, and I think the reason I’m good at weaving is because I don’t do it. I run to the outside and just pass everyone there. That way I’m usually only running around 1-2 people at most. Sure I do some hopping up on and off curbs, but I think it still saves some time and effort. And it must work, because I hit the first mile in something like 1.01. And congratulations on a great run on a long day! It was fun seeing you. Hope you get to stay for dinner next time!
That’s crazy that you only added .01! I am going to follow you from now on.
Great job on all those workouts and congrats on the 5K!! My blog definitely keeps me accountable to things too. If I write it down for everyone to see, there’s a much greater chance I’ll stick to it, even if I’m not motivated. Glad you ended up doing well, even after a long day of workouts! Have a great weekend!
What a day! Nice job completing three strong workouts. You are definitely going to be ready for the tri!
Congrats on your race! I actually think I saw you there…sorry I didn’t say hi! The only way to practice racing is to race, so it’s probably good to do it no matter what (at least that’s what I tell myself!) Hope you have a good weekend!
I thought that was you! Sorry for staring awkwardly
Haha you’re hard core!
I’ve had a conflict every weekend for those Twilight 5k’s. I have to get to one soon! I hope that Leela’s ankle keeps getting better!
That is an awesome time for the 5K!!! Great job on a day filled with workouts!
I did that with my Garmin for the first CC 5k that I ran too! It was so annoying ha. You are speedy!!!!
That’s an awesome 5K time
