Welcome to my blog

I'm a 20-something running my way through Denver.

2012 Races

Denver Rock n' Roll Half Marathon (9-22) Bear Chase Trail Half Marathon (9-30)

Weights Week

I didn’t realize how lucky we’ve been with weather this summer until this week.  We’re getting pelted with rain here in DC.

Because of this, I’m not bike commuting or biking home at lunch to walk Leela.  Add in a relatively slow work week and my lunch hours are free for strength training.

Usually I do one upper body workout, one lower body workout and one full body workout per week when it comes to my weight lifting.  This week, however, I’m following this plan, which is 4 days a week with different body parts targeted each day.

This coincides with a quasi-step back week in my marathon training.  I ran 4 miles (2.5 miles commuting home + 1.5 miles with Leela) yesterday.  I’ve learned the secret to getting your dog to run faster is getting caught in a downpour.

She hates the rain but loves being toweled off

Tomorrow I have 8 miles on tap and on Sunday I’m running a half marathon.  This is what happens when you follow race addicts on twitter.

I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to keep up this strength routine, but I like going to a website and having it tell me exactly what to do.  I also like trying new-to-me moves.  A free personal trainer sort of.

Do you go to the gym with a plan when you strength train?

  • Yeah this rain…not so good for the cycling.

  • Seriously, you are right, we were really lucky this summer. I rocked the indoor workouts this week, yay for treadmills? hah. I have a pretty set strength plan that I do, pretty much 1-2 days a week that the PT gave. Always happy to share. Good luck on your half. I am sure you are going to do awesome. can’t wait to read the recap!

  • I always need a plan. GIves me something to focus on. I’ve seen the Jamie Eason plan and was thinking about trying it out after the marathon. I’ve never done body-part splits before, wouldn’t hurt to give it a shot.

BTW, how did you like Bossypants as an audio book? I listened to it a few weeks ago on my long run and kept thinking to myself it would be a better “read” than “listen”.

    Enjoy the step-back week!

  • my pups also love being toweled off. i think it’s the only reason they like going outside in the rain!

  • I need a lifting plan but I always tend to forget the plan and try new things. Right now I’ve been switching between kettlebells and handweights. Good luck with the half marathon this weekend.

Oh, I think I picked the perfect week to be out of DC.

  • The rain has sucked so much this week and conitues to suck into the weekend causing my poor tri to turn into a bike, run only.

And I blame half the races im doing this year on twitter :) this is a good thing I think :)

  • Lately, I’ve been relying on Body Pump for my strength training..but mike and I did go to the gym to do free weights today. I haven’t done any on my own that I really didn’t have any plan whatsoever, I just sort of went from one exercise to the other. It worked out that way, though! I kind of feel that if there’s a set plan, I might get bored or just wont want to do that certain exercise when it comes time.I know plans work..but matter what it should be enjoyable. :)

  • Good luck at the half!! I’ve been wanting to do that one at some point and it looks like a nice course. Great weather for it, too! Nice the humidity seems to have left us over night.
