Welcome to my blog

I'm a 20-something running my way through Denver.

2012 Races

Colfax Marathon (5-20) Boulder 70.3 (8-5)

New City Resolutions

While most people made new year’s resolutions last week, the change from 2011 to 2012 is not as momentous to me as the change from DC to Denver.  (By the time you are reading this, we’ll be on the road!).  Here are some goals I have for the upcoming year in my new town.

  • Try CrossFit. I think CrossFit is really, really intimidating.  I also know a few CrossFit people who act like they have joined a cult, which annoys me.  But I think it is probably an awesome workout.  I don’t know if I’ll like it but I think I should at least give it a try to push myself out of my comfort zone.
  • Run a sub-4 hour marathon.  I will break this time in 2012.  Hopefully at this race.*
  • Do my first 70.3.  At this race.*
  • Join a running club.  I’ve seen first-hand how the CAR mafia girls improved with the help of their running club.  Not only do I want to get faster, but I want to meet new people.  Two birds with one stone.  The main reason I’ve never joined a club is pure laziness – I hate the idea of driving somewhere to go run.  Time to get over that.
  • Run more than 867 miles. That’s how much I ran in 2011.  Since I started running in 2007, I’ve managed to up my mileage every year.  2007 – 361 miles, 2008 – 478 miles, 2009 – 516 miles, 2010 – 725 miles.  Maybe I can break 1000 in 2012.

I’d say, outside of these fitness-related goals, the theme for 2012 will be to try new things.  New restaurants, new trails, new friends.  Everything will be new.  So my main new-city-resolution is to say yes to as many new things as possible.

*I was going to wait until I was in Denver to sign up for races, but after the craziness of the last few weeks I need races to look forward to.  They keep me sane.

  • Good luck with everything Liz! Hope your road trip goes well! Excited to follow your running adventures in Denver – and to see your new blog name. :)

  • Ha. Thats the same reason I have never joined a running group either. Plus for some reason I’m kindof scared to. I have no clue why.

I hope your drive goes well and you are able to stop at lots of tasty food places along the way.

  • I just wrote a post about how I am excited to try new things with you!!! I really struggled here last week- I was super homesick. I hope your travels are going well and I cant wait to see you!!

  • So many people are doing half ironmans this year! Being in a new city was pretty scary for me but it didn’t take long before I felt pretty well adjusted

  • oh MAN, more people signed up for boulder! i’m thinking about it…..

  • Hey Liz! I just recently found your blog and because I lived in DC was interested in reading about how the city is via another runner’s eyes. Though I know now that you’re moving to Denver (a beautiful city I’ve never been to) I relate a lot, since I moved to Seattle from DC a couple of years ago. It will be fun to read about your transition and your goals for this new year seem to be wonderful! I’m also commenting to say that I’m a runner who does crossfit and I love it, and was unsure about it when I started. The cult feel that some people seem to give is annoying, I try hard not to put out that vibe though it’s hard when you come across another crossfitter who wants to talk about it. Finding the right gym is key; one that doesn’t push the paleo diet relentlessly, one that isn’t only focused on competitions, and one that has a broad range of clients (old, young, an even ratio men and women). Anyway, good luck in the move and all the new adventures. I look forward to reading more about it.
PS- running clubs are awesome too, that is how I met my husband and all my friends in Seattle when I moved here!

I just added you to my reader. There are a lot of great bloggers in DC you should try to meet! Thanks for the great advice on crossfit. That sounds exactly the kind of gym I would want.

  • Crossfit kinda scares me too. It’s almost like a cult.

I never thought about join a running club. I definitely would need to improve my running first!

  • Good luck with the drive! You know I was a CF fan for almost two years and stopped when we got pregnant. I definitely felt the most strong doing CF and it has its own mindset, lingo, and theory of exercise. It’s just not what you’re used to for strength training. You’ll get strong, and it will mess with your head! Don’t be surprised if you’re too sore to run the next day though.

  • Joining a running group will make everything better! That is how I made a lot of my friends in DC and progressed WAY further in running than I ever expected. Good luck in your new home!

  • I echo your thoughts about people and crossfit – it’s like, if you do it, you’re in the club and can talk about the WOD and things like that. It’s a bit too intense (I think) for me. Although I’m sure it’s a kick butt workout. Cheers to you! At least you’re willing to try it!

Also – you will have NO problem finding a running club out here – SO many!

    Safe travels!
